Well Edwina Currie, here it is, reports and evidence that yes, people really are going hungry. Infact children are going hungry. Kids Company in London, according to a recent article in the I, has reported a surge in children coming into their centres for foods. Food banks are being set up across the country at a rate of one a week.
Just in case you think these people are all scroungers who can’t manage their affairs and are spending all their money on booze and fags some of the recent people at a food bank include a student who lost his job and is now homeless, and a nurse. A couple recently committed suicide because they had no money and no transport and couldn’t cope with walking 12 miles to get food. That happened in this country. Kids Company operates in London – the 6th richest country in the world. Further evidence that the gap between rich and poor continues to get wider – it’s the widest it has ever been.
To top it all many schools have seen the portions of their school meals reduced in an effort to save money meaning these hungry children can’t even be guaranteed a filling meal at school.
Join www.kidscoplatepledge.org to help support children who are not sure where their next meal is coming from and then write to your MP and ask them what they are doing to sort this out.
